Sassa is responsible for administering the social grants in South Africa on behalf of the South African Government. Social grants or social assistance is one of the source of income for almost 20 million South African.
ISSA Good Practice Award
The agency has recently scooped an award for ISSA Good Practice for Africa in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire, 18 May 2023 . The award was received by the Social Development Minister earlier this month. This demonstrates the importance of the work that social development is doing and impacting on the lives of South Africans in need.

* Older persons- 02 June 2023
* Disability grants- 05 June 2023
* Children’s grants – 06 June 2023
Note: there is no fixed payment date for the special COVID-19 SRD
Requirements for Old Age Grant Application
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- The applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
- The applicant must reside in South Africa.
- Must be 60 years of age or older.
- The applicant must not be in receipt of another social grant for him or herself.
- The applicant and spouse must comply with the means test.
- The applicant must not be maintained or cared for in a State Institution.

Requirements for Child Support Grant Application
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- The primary care giver must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
- Both the applicant and the child must reside in South Africa.
- The applicant must be the primary care giver of the child/ children concerned.
- The child/children must be under the age of 18 years
- The applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test.
- An applicant can not apply for more than six non biological children.
- The child can not be cared for in state institution.

Requirements for Disability Grant Application
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- The applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
- The applicant must be resident in South Africa.
- The applicant must be 18 to 59 years of age.
- The applicant must submit a medical / assessment report confirming the impact of disability.
- The applicant’s medical assessment must not be older than 3 months at date of application.
- The applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test.
- The applicant must not be maintained or cared for in a State Institution.
- The applicant must not be in receipt of another social grant in respect of him or herself.
