Requirements to Apply for Old Age Grant or Qualifying criteria for Older Persons Grant:
• Applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee staying (residing) in South Africa
• Applicant must be sixty (60) years or older in order to qualify for the older persons grant
• Applicant (and spouse) must comply with the means test
• Applicant must not be a recipient of any other social grant
• Applicant must not be maintained or looked after in any state funded institution.
What is Means Test?
Sassa said “In South Africa Social Assistance is subject to means testing which implies that SASSA evaluates the income and assets of the person applying for social assistance as well as his/her spouse in order to determine whether the person’s means are below a stipulated amount. This means test is a way of determining whether a person qualifies to receive a grant as grants are indeed meant for those who have insufficient means to support themselves. The means test varies from one grant type to another.”
They continued and said “Note: Grants for older persons, war veterans and Disability Grants are paid on a sliding scale; that is, the more private income you have, the smaller the government support you may qualify for.”
Documents Required
- Certified copy of the applicant’s Identity Document.
• Certified copy of Identity Document (ID) of the applicant’s spouse (if married)
• Certified Copy of Proof of Spousal Relationship/ Marital status (e.g. Marriage Certificate/ Decree of Divorce/ Death Certificate)
• If proof the spousal relationship is not obtainable an affidavit prescribed by SASSA may be accepted
• Proof of Income—if means is declared.
• If no income is declared, an affidavit prescribed by SASSA may be accepted.
• Confirmation of Banking Details (e.g. certified copy of bank statement)
